Bringing Abastumani resort and historic astrophysics observatory back to life
The Government plans rehabilitation works in a historic small town of Abastumani, located in Adigeni Municipality, 240 kilometers from Tbilisi. The renovation works will be also carried out in an astrophysics observatory of Abastumani. The place is notable for climatic spa and moderately dry mountainous climate.

The balneological resort is famous for its healing features, such thermal waters and pure air that makes it attractive both for internal and external tourists. People visit small town to treat different types of tuberculosis,
chronic bronchitis and mild forms of bronchial asthma and other illnesses. Mountain climate provides fresh air in Abastumani all year round.

Abastumani is located in an evergreen valley 28 kilometers from Akhaltsikhe. Scientific studies of Abastumani thermal waters started in 70s of 19 thcentury. Adolf Remmert, head of then Tbilisi Provincial Mineral Waters Department contributed significantly to carrying out the project. As representative of the Foundation of Municipal Development says, at the moment rehabilitation of the historic houses are underway. Restoration works are funded by the World Bank and is worth 3.7 million GEL.

An observatory was built in 1932

According to the Foundation of Municipal Development, the project envisions rehabilitation of 18 historic houses located on central street in their original form, built between 18t th and 19 th centuries.

As the representative of the Foundation of Municipal Development said, wooden houses with balconies have aesthetic patterns and lean-to roofs, typical to the period when they were built. The restoration procedures of historic houses are due to end in autumn 2019.

It is apparent that the observatory needs rehabilitation works

As for the restoration of Evgeny Kharadze National Astrophysics Observatory, the project implies its full reconstruction. Information center for visitors, café, exhibition and working spaces will be arranged inside the building. Additionally, existing library will be renovated as well. It is also planned to restore ropeway built in 1982.. New parking lot will be arranged too.

Abastumani resort is renowned for it thermal waters and fresh air

As reported, rehabilitation of water supply and sewage systems in Abastumani are due to start in 2019 and complete by 2021. The project is expected to create work places for local population and contribute to the flow of tourists to the region in coming years.

Rehabilitation works has not been done since the collapse of the USSR

The Abastumany observatory was founded in 1932 by Evgeny Kharadze. Evgeny was a Georgian astronomer and public figure. In 1959-1966 he worked as a head of Tbilisi State University.

The place has still maintained its beauty and attractiveness

The Abastumany observatory was the first astrophysics observatory in the Soviet Union. The observatory was intended to observe galaxies, stars and the solar system errors. Nearly 10 thousand tourists visit the site annually. At present 125 people are employed there.
