Enguri – Scheduled to be the next new tourist zone
According to Government decree 476 # issued in March 2017, Georgia Energy Development Fund established a Company called “Enguri Tourist Center” Ltd. The Ltd Company purchased an area around the Enguri dam for the proposed construction of a museum and other touristic attractions. “Coco Architect” is in charge of progressing the project which is due to be completed by 2021.

The dam is located near Georgia’s north-western town of Jvari. The Enguri dam is the world’s second highest concrete arch dam,
with a height of 271.5 metres and 728 metres wide. The Dam was conceived before World War I by Georgian public figure Niko Nikoladze.

However construction of the Enguri dam only began in 1961 and was eventually completed in 1977. The Enguri dam lies on the administrative breakaway point between Georgia and Abkhazia its occupied region. The dam is part of the Enguri Hydro-Electric Power Plant. The electricity generated by the dam goes into grids in Abkhazia and it also provides nearly half of Georgia’s hydro energy. Last year, it was added to the list of the country’s most distinguished cultural heritage sights and was officially granted the status of National Monument.

When completed the tourist zone will cover 157 hectares and it will include a scientific centre, open concert area and facilities for extreme sport such as zip-line. High lookout spots and cable transport are planned to be constructed to let tourists observe a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Tourists will also be able to travel deep down into the dam via a 280 metre elevator, to discover things previously accessible only to workers.
