Discover Svaneti – Part 1
Svaneti is a historic province in the northwestern part of Georgia. It is surrounded by the Caucasus Mountains . The highest mountain in Georgia, Mount Shkhara (5,201 metres) is located in the province. Svaneti has an unique nature and architectural monuments. Let’s have a look at some of the must-see things in the province.

1. Svaneti Towers were his
torically family dwellings, fortress of treasure and defence. They are among rare sights of the world. They offered protection to the Svans, their livestock and valuable possessions. As copies of religious scriptures, icons and relics cite, most of the towers date back to the period between the 9th and 12th century. Since 1996, the traditional towers of Svaneti have been protected as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2. Ushguli is a community of four villages located at the head of the Enguri gorge in Svaneti, Georgia. Compared to Mestia, Ushguli has remained as an intact location preserving the villages' originality. Ushguli is located at 2,100 metres which is officially the highest inhabited place in Europe. Apart from the Shkhara Mountain, visitors can discover beautiful villages, amazing nature and around 30 medieval towers. Locals believe Ushguli was a summer retreat for Queen Tamar of Georgia (12th-13th Century).

3. Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography has almost one century under its belt. The museum has 6 permanent exhibition halls. Visitors have a chance to see artefacts discovered during archeological excavations and numismatic samples. It houses 9th to 18th century masterpieces of world importance such as the Icon of the Forty Sebastian Martyrs, an Embroidered Byzantine Icon, Venetian Cross, jug donated by Queen Tamar, and earliest remaining sample of illustrated manuscript- Adishi Gospels (897). The last exhibition hall in the museum is dedicated to the artefacts of Georgian Ethnography.

4. Svaneti province should not be left unless you have tasted one of their traditional dishes. Kubdari is among must-taste dishes of Svaneti. It is a bread meal filled with meat (lamb, pork or kid) and a mixture of onion and spices. One of its particular ingredients is a variety of cumin grown in Svaneti. Kubdari gained the status of Intangible Cultural heritage of Georgia in 2015.

5. Koruldi Lakes – visitors to Svaneti have a possibility of observing not only amazing landscapes of mountain and unique nature but also a number of lakes. The group of alpine lakes lying at the foot of Mt. Ushba have breathtaking views of the mountains, Svaneti villages and the Enguri Gorge. The lakes are located at a height of 2850 metres. The reflection of clouds and mountains create a great scene for visitors.
