First time in the low budget accommodations in Georgia

My friends and family back home might describe me as being a bit “tight” with money - to those who don’t know, this means they might accuse me of not being as free with money as them. I call it a number of things, “being careful,” making my money work a bit harder “or just getting “value for money”. Even Millionaires I understand have a habit of doing this. So what’s wrong with that?

But since I am no millionaire and
when I need to find holiday accommodation, I have a good search of accommodation sites for a “good deal”.

Generally speaking when I am looking for accommodation (and I am usually on a fairly low budget) I try and pin point a central location with amenities, good reviews about cleanliness, staff, wifi and of course a reasonable price.

Having stayed in a few budget places in Georgia (usually choosing the accommodation through sites like Booking.com) that my experience has been very mixed. The statements made on these sites in a lot of cases did not reflect my actual experience. They exaggerated the positive and did not mention or hid negative aspects. Which made me wonder who had written such glowing terms about some rather unsavoury places - enabling them to quote some very high ratings on these sites.

Pictures of the accommodation would more than likely show a very clean, calm space for sleeping in dormitories, with a clean and spacious kitchen and bathroom areas. Whereas in reality, the dormitories would be very noisy with bags, washed clothes, smelly shoes everywhere. People would come in and out at all hours of the day and night when you were trying to sleep, talking at the tops of their voices, switching on the light and generally being inconsiderate and sometimes drunk.

I came back one afternoon to a hostel to pack my bag to find 2 women having a yoga class in the middle of the room. When I opened my bag to pack my things they said they needed the space. No doubt you can predict my reaction to that.

People would be making food in the kitchen at 4 a.m in the morning despite notices on the kitchen door to say they should not do this. As for the bathrooms, in one place I hated it so much (because it was unclean) that I didn’t wash for 3 days. Thought I would catch some nasty bug.

In some places “24 hour reception” meant in reality ringing the staff to get up from their bed to look after you. Air conditioning - meant - open the window. 24 hour security – meant - well they just lied, the door was not locked and anyone could walk in at any time.

Even in low budget hotels there have been rather odd sights - like staff ironing bedding and sheets right in the middle of reception. And staff sitting about eating their lunch in the reception area meant for customers. Another time I had chosen what I thought looked like a nice hotel only to find out when I went to bed that the hotel was located directly above a bingo hall and all night I could hear the bingo caller shouting on the loud speaker.

So the advice is – Don’t expect too much from low budget, always look at the negative reviews first and never book too many nights at once – just in case you have to find somewhere else.

I am glad to say that I have survived the experiences and my health remains in tact.

My friends and family would just tell me to open my wallet a little wider in future so as to stay in a better class of accommodation. Ah yes – but where would be the fun and challenge in that.
