Discover protected areas and national parks in Georgia- Part 1
Georgia is a small country with a variety of flora. There are twenty protected areas and national parks in Georgia. Algeti National park – it is located in the Tetsritskaro district (in the east of Georgia). The park provides a picnic area and a touristic trail called “Sanepo Ridge”. The trail begins at the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary of Manglisi located near the park and ends in the picnic area. Visitors are offered horse ride tour in
the park and a possibility of hiring a guide. It functions all year round.

Algeti National park

Ajameti Managed Reserve – it is located in Imereti (in the west of Georgia). It was initially established as a reserve purely for the purpose of preserving the rare Imeretian Oak and Zelkova trees. Some of the trees are over 250 years old. Infrastructure has yet to be developed in the reserve but the beauty and ancient treasures of the area is a must-see.

Ajameti Managed Reserve

Batsara-Babaneuri Protected Areas –is located in Kakheti (in the east of Georgia), the area includes Batsara Babaneuri Nature Reserve and Ilto Managed Reserve. Batsara gorge preserves the remains of the tertiary relict dendroflora and about 270 hectares of yew forests not found anywhere else in the world. Tours in the area are organized for educational, scientific research and monitoring purposes.

Batsara-Babaneuri Protected Areas

Ilto Managed Reserve was established in order to protect some precious wood species and characteristic fauna. Birds such as buzzard, hawk, sparrow-hawk, eagle and even bearded vulture are seen on occasion in the managed reserve as well as other animals like hedgehogs, martens, rabbits, badgers, jackals, foxes, wolves, wild boar, bear, deer, lynx and chamois. The Ilto Managed Reserve offers botanical, educational and adventure eco-tours.

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park – is located in the central part of Georgia and includes Borjomi Nature Reserve, Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, Nedzvi Managed Reserve and Goderdzi fossil forest Natural Monument. The park provides well-arranged paths, picnic and camping areas. It offers hiking, horse riding, biking, snow shoes, cultural and educational tours. The routes are open throughout the year.

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park

Vashlovani Protected Areas is located in the Kakheti region, in the eastern part of Georgia. The areas include Vashlovani Nature Reserve, the National Park and 3 Natural Monuments – Eagle Gorge, the Takhti-Tepa Mud Volcanoes and the Kaklisyure Alazani floodplain forest. It provides well-arranged paths, camping areas, bungalows, geological, biking, photo, cultural and educational tours. Visitors should first go to the visitors’ centre and ask about the things they are interested in experiencing in the area. Staff at the centre will help with any enquiries.
