The Calendar of Georgian Winegrowers

The Calendar of Georgian Winegrowers
Every year vineyards in Georgia undergo the same procedure. Winegrowers have different intentions that are influenced by climate and traditions of the country. They can fulfill their goals through various options.

Winter options for winemakers:

To prune the arms of the grapevine (it is a very demanding job)

To prune the canes of the grapevine (it is a simple and quick technique)

To trim the grape wine involving a pruning machine (basically pruning the canes)

Minimized pruning (skip the procedure in
winter)

Trimming with a pruning machine always requires additional manual pruning, which results in late flowering.

Transplanting in spring

The grapevine should be transplanted in early spring. The leaves are usually dusted with the mixture of sulfur and calcium. Organic winegrowers prefer minimized dusting. They sometimes grow such plants among the grape vines that create nitrogen and organic nutrients for the soil. Besides, the grape vines are supposed to be in a balanced position to get the sufficient sunlight.

Watering in summer

During the flowering of the grapevine, warm and mild weather is necessary as well as minimized interference of the winegrowers. Again, grape vines should be dusted for prevention of Botrytis. The soil among the grape vines may be dug out a little to let water move smoothly and to avoid the soil dehydration. Meanwhile, winegrowers are supposed to use organic methods of fighting with the pest.

Harvesting in autumn

Winegrowers have to make choice between manual and mechanical harvesting. After the harvesting, grape wines are once more dusted and the soil is fertilized. Moreover, winegrowers collect pruned branches and burn or cut them. And, lastly, grapevine support structures are reinstalled.
