Land of The Wolves

The name of the country ‘Georgia’ is believed to originate from the Persian word “gorg” which means ‘land of wolves’. The history of Georgia goes back at least 3500 years and Christianity (the state religion) was adopted 2000 years ago.

Vakhtang I of Iberia (the 5-6th century) is referred to as Vakhtang I Gorgasali. The title includes the same Persian world “gorg” and “sali” (Armenian) or “sari” (Persian) together translated as “wolf-head”.

The king is known for his alliance with the Byzantine Empire to fight against Sasanian Iranian hegemony. He is also believed to reorganize the Georgian Orthodox Church and founded Tbilisi, Georgia's modern capital.

Sakartvelo - Georgia

The name of Georgia is pronounced in Georgian as “sakartvelo”. It is believed that the story of establishing “Georgia” as an international name for the country (besides its historical roots with Armenian and Persian designations) is also linked with St. George due to his significant place in the country’s culture. Meanwhile, it is sometimes a matter of confusion that one of the states in the United States has the identical name and foreigners often mistake the country Georgia in the south Caucasus for the state Georgia in the U.S.
