Computer Literacy - Part of Strategy
23 September, 2010

Skeptics are still around, but their number is clearly diminishing. Nonchalance towards the computer literacy, brashly put forward in Georgia a decade or two ago is no longer a case. Even the great-grand moms and dads have warmed their hearts and opened their minds towards the inevitable advent of the computer era.

Many of them

are already glued to their comp-screens, and some are diligently saving money to purchase those cute little laptops and net-books. A sophisticated cell-phone has already become a very common-place gadget, and is no longer widening anybody’s eyes.  Let’s say, only a gadget as new and trendy as an i-Pad may probably live up to their augmented expectations. So much for seniors! Let’s now delve into the computerized life of the younger generation. Most of the Georgian kids – as much as the children of rest of the world – are currently into it. Yes, they know how to handle their comps, but most of them may not be aware of how to turn it into a life-improving tool of their life-time. One can never be too young to start mastering computer. We need it the second we are born (!) and never get to live without it as long as we are breathing. Computer is not just a toy to be playing with uncontrollably. I will probably not reveal a great secret by saying that computers and internet are voracious eaters of time. This is true only because we are simply mishandling the advantages of the computer-oriented world by letting the technology take over our time and confuse our priorities, especially when it comes to our young ones. This is exactly where parental discretion will be appreciated very highly. The educational process and career-building drudgery may no longer be considered possible without relevant computer literacy which may not fall on our heads like manna from the sky. It has become part of this country’s state strategy and it should be handled as one. But learning the skill academically is one thing and using that skill successfully might be a horse of a totally different color. Unless all of us become acutely conscious of the time and content, used in the process of handling our computers, we might become serious losers. Let’s say, computer is a regular instrument for achieving our goals dedicated to acquiring a better life-style. Certainly, entertainment is part of it, but only a part. What matters the most is how not to let it put us off track and rule over us. It is us who should own its power and make it work to our advantage, not to our detriment, especially when it comes to the computer literacy and its usage by our children.
