David & Goliath

The story of Georgia and Russia is clearly the story of David and Goliath. ‘They confront each other, Goliath with his armor and shield, David with his staff and sling.

David hurls a stone from his sling with all his might, and hits Goliath in the center of his forehead.  The Goliath falls on his face to the ground, David takes Goliath’s sword and cuts off his head’. Isn’t this a fascinating similarity? Except that Georgia will never be in favor

of beheading Russia, but peaceful slashing of the brutal Goliath’s balls could very well be on Georgia’s current list of priorities. The handsome David, basking in the public admiration, does his job imperturbably and dexterously, hitting the bull’s eye and taking the bragging Goliath down a peg or two. Why should the fragile and tender David have decided to fight the uncouth and foul-mouthed Goliath who does not even understand what the modern civilization is all about? On the other hand, who would have told the rude giant that our contemporary world is about a none-violent resolution of disputes and conflicts? Even if somebody did, he would not have listen to that piece of a good advice. So David was compelled to enter the unequal fight not even being sure that he would win the contest. The nice guy David might have refrained from the precarious confrontation, but there was nobody except him in the whole world to stand up against the errogant and conceited Goliath and knock the hell out of him before the monster went too far. The thing is that David is not just another smart and daring little boy, but he is a farsighted and shrewd politician with a huge acumen for discerning between wrong and right. He knows it too well that the Goliath can destroy everything around unless he is admonished that he can’t do it. As a matter of fact, David is acting on behalf of the entire mankind in his endeavor to fight the vice and let the humanity celebrate. What helps David most of all is his unflinching and persistent conviction that the happy end is inevitable. He has that feeling right in his young and elegant bones. You just try to tell him the opposite and he might go berserk as if he had a vision that the Goliath can’t go unpunished. Goliath needs to be taken care of once and for all – David is thinking to himself – in order for all of us, including the Goliath’s own children, continue living in peace and happiness. David looks like mankind’s dream come true – living in the world, free from aggression, cruelty and brutality. And what sounds most encouraging is that the brilliant fighter for truth and justice is irreversibly sure that the good is going to be a winner over the evil. He is also clearly conscious of the support on part of the Goliath’s native – depressed and miserable – people as well as the entire global community. Hence it was only natural for our intrepid David to contend the Goliath. Hasn’t he had a glorious victory?
