Initialing the Future

Initialing the Future
The prevailing political sentiment in this Nation is that we are Europeans more than anything else – looks, manners, tastes, thoughts, aspirations . . . But certain patterns of our culture and social behavior would still make a looker-on think that part of us is Asian, which does not mean at all that Georgia should give up on dreaming of fulltime economic and political integration in the European Union, which is Georgia’s final address and ultimate destination. EU is our
future! And that future has already been initialed in black-and-white, officially, right in front of the entire world, including the teeth-grinding Russians. Oops! I am sorry Russia! Congrats Georgia! Shame on you, Ukraine! What’s wrong with you, man? Why are you scared that much?
Are you afraid of your former big bro? I am not terribly concerned about the Azeri refusal to join the good old European family – that might very well be temporary – but you, Ukraine, have totally flabbergasted me with your utterly unexpected backing off from your long-nursed international agenda. Do you remember that you are a genuinely European, rich and strong nation of 45 million people, who can make a straightforward guaranteed survival without having Russia dictate you what to do? I am not surprised that your European-minded people have taken to streets to tell you that you have made a lethal mistake. How can you doubt that your only place is in Europe, not in the scary historical shadow of Russia? Even we the Georgians know that much. Compare – you are so big and we are so small! And we are refusing to be intimidated by the starving Russian Bear. Russia is seriously annoyed with us both, and she is making brutal plans to retaliate. Initialing the document on Euro-Union association by Georgia was like a poisoned dagger, stabbed into the aching Russian body. We knew that, but we still did it. You know why? Because we believe the fact of initialing our European future is a well-calculated vital step, made by Georgia, which has gotten awfully tired of historical experiments, imposed on our poor little heads. Enough is enough! We need to do something truly daring and reasonable and let our people relax finally. And this is going to be impossible without us becoming the integral part of the best part of the world. We do not want to be associated any longer with the worst part of the current complicated world. How come, Ukraine, that you do not know better? Where is your political courage and self-respect? How about the experience of your post-soviet life? Do you understand that your defeat in the struggle for our mutual European orientation and further development may tragically affect our future, which is at stake right now? And at stake it is because Russia – our old mentor and patron – will never give up on us unless we are snatched away from her by the good will of powers that be. Russia wants us back into the evil soviet caboodle. Russia wants to see the USSR restored as Phoenix from the ashes of burnt-down soviet history, not being aware that the former Soviet Union has been turned into a dunghill which continues stinking like hell up until now. Georgia does not want to be part of that social, economic and political dunghill. Do you? Georgia wants and is ready to be absolutely and irrevocably independent from that dreadful Russian supremacy, but is not refusing to cooperate with the Bear, based on mutually recognized parity and unadulterated equality. Do you? Georgia’s current concept of its future is absolutely out of pace with that of Russia. How about yours? Georgia is practically prepared to teach Russia a lesson of love, friendship and peaceful coexistence as long as Russia understands the ABC of a modern national sovereignty and peoples’ endeavor to achieve and maintain one. Are you too? I know exactly why your freedom-loving and hard-working people of all ages and genders have taken to the streets, forgetting for a while the comfort and convenience of good and peaceful life, and giving preference to the fight for the ideals of national independence, liberty, rights and equality. Maybe this is the crucial final time to say No to the Russian dominance and traditional imperialistic do-as-I-say-or-else attitude. We the Georgians tried to awaken the world towards the truth about Russia, but we have winced lately, having started thinking diplomatically and behaving in a politically correct fashion. This could be wise and logical, but wisdom and logic are not the right tools in dealing with Russia. I am glad, my dear Ukraine, that you have refused from playing a regular sage, and have started creating a trenchant political prerequisite for introducing radical changes in relations between Russia and us the former soviet republics. I love Russia, but I would also love to teach her a lesson, as I said – historical and strictly political. Ukraine, if you do this, I am all yours. Are the new winds blowing? Yes, it smells like it? And the smell is coming from your territory!
