Equal are the whelps of lion ...
‘The Man in the Panther’s Skin’ by Shota Rustaveli could serve as the most powerful vehicle for Georgia to whisk itself firmly and confidently over unreachably elevated threshold of the European house of nations. Today, Georgia has a female defense minister, and there is nothing unusual and unbelievable in the fact for us. Just the contrary! The Georgian culture has over centuries nursed and admired woman and recognized gender equality as a norm. Queen Tamar, aka King of Georgia, is the
female monarch and the sovereign of the kingdom, where woman’s political function and her leading role was strongly established and emphasized. Equal are the whelps of lion, be they female or male – proudly sounded right from the lips of the poetic genius of the early medieval Georgian renaissance. It is not the configuration of borders and the amount of riches that puts Georgia straight in the heart of Europe but the values it has always lived by. Neither are the incidental rulers, nor felons of the day that make our face. Black sheep are found in any good family and this should not be made a decisive indicator when evaluating the pros and cons for opening the gates of the West for Georgia. When Georgia used to live by Western means and values, the West itself had no idea what the Western values meant. West came around with Western values when Georgia had already left the Western realm, weakened and afflicted by insurmountable vicissitudes of life, which has tragically lasted up until our current rainy days. From now on, a woman will be taking care of Georgia’s armed forces, already sharpening the angles of our military image and letting the feelers out for the complicated mechanism’s further advance towards maturity. The manicured fingers might get a sturdier grip on the process than any male has ever had in the past or will have in the future. I am not even saying anything about the lipsticked mouth, out of which every utterance will hit the bull’s eye. This is the case when each bullet will have its unambiguous billet for this Georgian government to make the nation’s point the clearest ever. Congratulations Georgia! And thank you for having given a chance to the most faithful and the most intelligent companion of a Georgian man – the lady of the house! Time has ripened to let the female part of our gene get the job done. This new high-caliber governmental appointment in Georgia became a talk of the town forthwith, and the newsworthiness of the story has now reached the international level. Now that the defense emissary of Georgia to the European power house is a woman – a wife, a mother, a daughter and a sister – the message, sent out to the West from this torn-apart but sacred land is going to be lucid, sharp, straight and brief: we are ready, and please let us in! We know where we stand and what we are striving for. We have a value, and please keep a keen eye on it! This is the message of her ladyship, the new minister of defense of Georgia. From time to time, the overall feeling here is that we are not being taken quite seriously by the Euro-Atlantic world, and its structures are rejecting us for fear of hurting our furiously anti-West neighbor, or for other reasons that need better identification. If this vacillating Western attitude towards Georgia lasts too long, things might take a totally different curve, which would get very difficult to straighten out post factum. The mission of the lady minister of Georgia is acquiring crucial status, and my inexplicable sense of belief in her is telling me that only she can cope with the dilemma. If not she, then nobody else! No sooner had the lady been appointed to the responsible post than she sent a transparent message to the West: ‘Think about us first thing in the morning, either now or never, we need you straight away, we cannot be alienated any longer, time is hanging heavy on our hands and working against us, we might lose our chance forever, and when it gets too late, please don’t offer us your doctors after we are dead! Just listen in to this message! Only tough, smart and cute female ministers are capable of sending out messages like this. And not in vain at all! The West is going to lend its somewhat deafened year to the cry of a woman who knows exactly what she wants and what she is talking about. Our lady minister fits into the system and the situation as nobody else before. Europe, take note! She will never lie, she will never exaggerate, and she will never give up on you! And she will learn when she has to. If there is anything western in this country, it is the new leader of the military thought and might of Georgia. Why am I talking with such enthusiasm? Guess why, because I do not want anybody to make a mistake when judging her. She is a doer, a hard-hitting doer. Have I met her before? Yes, on a couple of media occasions? Do I know her that well? No, I do not! Then what makes me speak this confidently? Just a feeling in my ancient, but weathered bones!
