Hatred

Hatred

I will be seventy next spring, and I have seen a fair amount of both love and hatred in my lifetime. I somehow used to cope with the sensation of love (in both directions) better than with hatred.

Sense of hatred has always scared me to death. I never knew what to do with it, how to mold it and pack it, and get rid of it, but I knew it was bothering me to the extent of nausea and unsettled

stomach. In a word, I was very bad with handling the feeling of hatred, whether it was inside my psyche or threatened me from outside. That’s why I have always tried to live without it or to liberate myself from its shackles as soon as possible. Meanwhile, there are so many people out there who are overwhelmed with this scary and bothering feeling – often without any good reason for it – letting it destroy not only their current lives but their personality too. Writing this piece, I have not consulted any competent shrinks and psychologists for better opinions – I am simply presenting here my heart-felt feelings concerning this destructive human (animals must be free of it) emotion which probably regulates our lives just as much as its opposite – the power of love. The ghost of hatred is lurking everywhere, reigning in the families and at workplace, in bedrooms and streets, between groups of people and the entire nations. Hatred is an unwanted burden and foolish waste of time, an obstacle on the way to better life, a terminator of the most cherished of human emotions, source of poisoned pleasures and mother of heinous crimes. Using a conventional wisdom, hatred will destroy all that love has attempted to build. Then why bother ourselves with what has enough potential to devastate us? Why not to solve our problems with love and understanding, and handle all our difficulties without the feeling of hatred. If we are concerned so much about living in a drug-free society, why don’t we want to create a hatred-free world around us? Hatred is much more pernicious and dangerous than any narcotic. Damn! I am sounding so gullible again but I can’t stop myself. Can we at least take this tearful lamentation of mine as a signal, a reminder, and a whistle-blow to recognize that life is much better and easier without the pressure generated by hatred?  Man has gone through so much of it! How much more of it do we have to taste to finally learn a lesson and strike the word out of our vocabulary?  An average human lifespan is so instantaneous! And we want to waste it being devoured by the worst of the feelings, experienced by a human being? Let’s not give way to hatred any more. Let’s use love instead as the best instrument for destroying our destroyer! Let’s think about it together. Thinking will not hurt. Hatred can pollute the atmosphere and kill all life with as much power as the regular nuclear fallout. “There Is Still Time . . . Brother” – remember the banner in the finale of Stanley Kramer’s post-apocalyptic drama film (1959) ‘On the Beach’ with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner? Indeed, there is still time, folks! The chance is still here. Let’s grab it and use it without further waste of time!
