Queen Tamar, Svan Tower and Khevsur Warriors

Queen Tamar, Svan Tower and Khevsur Warriors
Sid Meier’s Civilization games have long been acclaimed as the golden standard of global strategy management games and are rightfully considered some of the most popular video game series ever, boasting a dedicated fan base in every corner of the world.

In the mod, the Georgian civilization is represented by Queen Tamar and, quite aptly, receives bonuses from building its cities and fighting its enemies in hilly areas. Its special building is a Svan Tower, which provides extra Faith (a
resource that allows a civilization to improve and spread its religion), and its special unit is a Khevsur Warrior.

For those not in the know: In every Civilization game, the player is supposed to choose and develop a civilization from ancient times to the near future. Turn-based gameplay allows each player, be it human or AI, to move units on the game map, build and improve infrastructure, establish diplomatic relations with other states/civilizations and ultimately to win by achieving one of the four possible victory conditions: Military conquest, achieving cultural dominance, developing ultramodern technologies or becoming the world’s diplomatic leader. The series have been noted for their sizable real-life geopolitical imitation and are considered to be a favorite hobby of many intellectuals worldwide.
Now what has all this to do with Georgia? Well, have you ever thought that the impressive list of 43 nations available in Civilization V could be expanded further? Ever wondered why your country, with its rich history, isn’t playable in this amazing game? So did we, Civilization aficionados at Georgian Journal, but sadly there was no such opportunity. Until now, that is. God bless “modders” (people who create modifications to video games) and their skillful hearts and hands. Thanks to the Dutch modder, Davey Henninger from Civilization Fanatics Center portal, a whole list of new civilizations can now geotv.gebe added to the game, including Georgia.
In the mod, the Georgian civilization is represented by Queen Tamar and, quite aptly, receives bonuses from building its cities and fighting its enemies in hilly areas. Its special building is a Svan Tower, which provides extra Faith (a resource that allows a civilization to improve and spread its religion), and its special unit is a Khevsur Warrior. Georgian civilization’s musical theme in time of peace is “Pikri” by Urmuli, and its war theme is “The Varangians” by Walid Feghali.
With the help of our longtime friend and contributor to Georgian Journal Vakhtang Lomjaria, who ranks number two in the CivPlayers MultiPlayer league worldwide ranking, we were able to track down Mr. Henninger, personally thank him for the good deed he’s done and ask him to tell us more about his creation.

Davey Henninger, professional modder:

“Georgia is one of my earlier mods. When I started modding, I noticed a clear lack of Eastern European civilizations in Civilization V. I started with Yugoslavia and soon moved to other Eastern European civilizations. I eventually came across Georgia, among others.
“Why did I pick Georgia? Well it all was because of Queen Tamar. First of all, Queen Tamar is female and celebrated female leaders are quite uncommon. What’s even more uncommon, or perhaps even unique, is that she is also called “The Great.” The fact that Tamar is considered Georgia’s – one of, if not – greatest ruler outright, led me to choosing her as the leader. That she was able to legitimately claim the throne is a remarkable feat on its own. Even more so to turn her reign into arguably the most successful in Georgia’s history.
“I wanted Georgia to be a hilly/mountainous civilization. When you play as Georgians, the ultimate focus of your strategy should be Faith and Growth. Queen Tamar’s traits allow the player to accumulate Faith very quickly, so a pantheon and a religion can be quickly established and developed. The Growth focus was included purely from a gameplay perspective, because hilly/mountainous regions in the game typically lack a clear Food income. I wanted Georgia to be able to function better in such terrains than other civilizations, because they quite neatly did just that, especially in Tamar’s time.”
