For the first time in Tbilisi: Diana Krall presents her new album
"I’m not a songwriter, and I don’t apologize for it"

On October 23rd, the Tbilisi Concert Hall welcomes one of the best female jazz singers of our time, the Canadian Diana Krall. She’s best known for her collaborations with musicians such as Ray Charles and Tony Bennett and although in her latest album, “Wallflower,” released in February, and accordingly, during her ongoing world tour, Ms. Krall covers pop songs from the 1960s and 1970s, those who expect to hear numbers
like ‘You don’t know me’ or ‘The best is yet to come’ will not be disappointed: apart from her new songs, Ms. Krall is going to play old favorites like “Cry me a river” and “The look of love” and she also takes requests. At one of the recent shows, someone called out a request for a song Ms. Krall had never performed publicly before, “Moon River”, and she and the band played it.

But let’s go back to her latest work. Generally, a jazz musician performing pop songs is not an unusual trend, but Wallflower’s case is different. Diana Krall doesn’t sing them the way Ella Fitzgerald or Herbie Hancock would do some popular hit. Instead, she keeps the original chords and delivers those tunes the way they are written.

‘I didn't want to take pop songs and turn them into jazz standards’ — she says, -‘instead I wanted to do these songs in a way that would honor the original writers’. Also, she says that before she could make a living playing jazz she supported herself by playing pop music. ‘In that sense, it wasn't so much stepping outside jazz as just going back to what I know’, Ms. Krall concludes.

Born on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up playing the piano. At age 15 her teacher saw she had an unusual talent and later on she studied in the Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA. Indeed, apart from being a great singer, she’s an accomplished pianist. Just like one of her greatest influences - Nat King Cole.

‘There’s hardly a song in my repertoire, that’s not in any way inspired by Nat King Cole’, she said during one of her concerts. And that’s true. Just like in Mr.Cole’s case, her playing never gets in the way of her singing, but it’s impossible not to notice those fabulous little improvisations she’s doing in between.

But the Tbilisi concert is not going to be about listening to sophisticated chords and improvisations. It will be about listening to your favorite songs the way they were written, but performed the way they have never been performed before. On October 23rd, Ms. Krall is going to build bridges between Jazz, Pop and Rock lovers.
