“Shota Rustaveli and I were clearly separated at birth” – British model on his similarity with Georgian poet
17 March, 2016
The photo where a British model, Richard Biedul and a famous Georgian 12th century poet, Shota Rustaveli are depicted side by side went viral on internet. Internet users continue to create different memes, like, for example, depicting Biedul on a 100 Lari banknote, where normally Rustaveli is portrayed. The similarities are evident not only for the people in Rustaveli’s home country, but also for Biedul himself. He posted the viral photo on his Facebook page commenting: “Shota Rustaveli and I
were clearly separated at birth. That makes me around 800 years old”.

SOVA.News correspondent in Europe, Sophia Tetradze managed to get hold of Biedul, who thought it was a great idea to give an interview on how he became hugely popular in Rustaveli’s home country.

- It is safe to say that you blew up Georgian internet. The users share the photo, where you say you and Rustaveli look very much like each other. Did you expect this joke would have such an impact?

- I saw the photo on Go Gala News last night and reposted it on Facebook. I could not have imagined that it would cause such emotions among Georgians of different generations.

- Do you like how Shota Rustaveli looked?

- Yes! I can’t believe how we look like each other. Even the clothes. It is incredible that he lived more than 800 years ago.

- How did you find out about him?

- I was tagged on one of the photos in Facebook and then I Googled his name.

- You definitely want to know more about him. What do you know about Rustaveli? Do you want to read his poem “The knight in the panther’s skin”?

- I read about him in Wikipedia, about his past, about how great was the influence he made on Georgian poetry. Unfortunately, I have not had time to read his poem but next week I will travel to Germany and I will definitely take a look at it.

- Do you have friends in Georgia or from Georgia? And what do you generally know about this country?

- I know very little about Georgia and I don’t think I have ever known any Georgian. With the exception, maybe, of Giorgi Kinkladze, a footballer who played for Manchester City and was a very good player. Everybody wanted to be as cool as he was.

- How about coming to Georgia? Lots of fans are waiting for you. You can be sure about that.

- Of course! Your country has a very rich history and I would like to know more.

- Tell us more about yourself. How long have you been working in fashion business? What are you doing right now and what projects do you take part in?

- Before I became a model, I was a lawyer in London and then, at one of the pubs, I was noted by an agent from fashion business. So, I have been working as a model for three years already and this is a wonderful experience. I’ve traveled around the world and met many wonderful people. I’ve collaborated with world-famous brands, such as Armani, Canali and La Perla. I’ve also worked with many photographers, like Mert and Marcus as well as supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Liu Wen. I am very lucky!

- Do you have a hobby? What do you do when you have a free time?

- I read books and watch movies. Also, I am a very big fan of city landscapes.

- We all have our idols. Do you have any in show business or any other sphere.

- I do not idolize anyone in particular. I would say that my biggest inspirations are my parents.

- What would you say to Shota Rustaveli, if you had a possibility to meet him?

- I would ask him where he bought that hat. I want to buy it too.
