Gozinaki with dried fruit - Modern version of Georgian New Year candy
14 December, 2015
Gozinaki is a popular Georgian treat made from honey and walnuts that is only prepared for the New Year . If you want to decorate your New Year’s table with something new and easily made but with a traditional twist, then make this delicious gozinaki with dried fruits. The recipe for modern gozinaki given here does not require traditional flattening and cutting the candy.

2 cups of walnut and almond mixture
1 cup of oatmeal
1 cup of dried
fruits (dried plums, cherries or apricots)
1/2 cup of honey
5 tsp of butter
½ tsp of cinnamon
1/3 cup of sugar

Roast walnuts and almonds over medium heat while constantly stirring. When they turn golden, cut them into small pieces. In a separate saucepan mix honey, sugar, butter and cinnamon (if you like) and bring the mixture to boil over medium heat. When it starts to foam, remove it from heat and cool let it slightly. Pour dried chopped fruits, nuts and oatmeal into the saucepan and mix well. (You can add sunflower seeds as well to your taste). Place spoonfuls of the mixture on a baking sheet, slightly flatten them and bake in the oven over 150 degrees until golden brown. But be careful and don’t overbake the cookies. Place gozinaki cookies on a plate, let them cool and serve. Santa Claus would not resist these crunchy and crispy delights paired with a cold glass of milk if you leave them under your Christmas tree.
