Shakarlama – Georgian butter cookies with almond

Shakarlama are tender butter cookies that occupy special place among Georgian desserts. Every housewife has her own recipe of these delicious cookies, some bake it plainly without nuts, some prefer with nuts and spices. Here is the recipe of most widespread and popular type of Shakarlama.

Ingredients:

100 grams of walnuts
100 grams of almonds
3 eggs or mayonnaise
350 grams of sugar
200
grams of butter or margarine
200 grams of sour cream
¼ teaspoon cardamom to your taste
600 grams of flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
Vanilla

Preparation:

Grind nuts in the food processor. Separately combine butter with sugar using electric mixer until it reaches creamy consistency. Add eggs, sour cream and mix up well. Add ground nuts, pinch of salt, baking powder, crushed cardamom, vanilla to the mixture and sift flour inside the bowl. Gently mix up the mass using your hands. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.

Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Roll out the dough and cut out cookies using glass, or shape small balls with your hands. Place cookies on the pan covered with baking sheet, you can also place extra almonds in the center of the cookies and bake them in the oven for 20 or 30 minutes until golden-brown. Let the cookies cool down and consume with cold milk, coffee or tea. During fasting one can exclude source cream, replace butter with margarine and eggs with fasting mayonnaise. The cookies will be equally delicious and tender. before serving cookies you can also sprinkle them with powder sugar.
