Winter’s top five warming cocktails made with Georgian ingredients
With winter’s arrival we shift from cooling and refreshing cocktails to hot drinks such as tea, coffee and hot chocolate, yet sometimes we want to try something new and delicious that would warm as well as cheer us up. So here we offer recipes of top 5 hot alcoholic beverages that can be prepared using Georgian natural products such as Georgian organic honey, natural wine and chacha (Georgian grappa). These delicious drinks will keep you warm in cold winter days
as well as help stay healthy and avoid catching cold.

1. Gluehwein

Gluehwine is the most popular and beloved hot alcoholic drink that can be found anywhere and Georgia is no exception. You can try mulled wine at Georgia’s winter resorts in Gudauri and Bakuriani or at winter markets, but better option is to prepare it for yourself. You can use either red dry or semi-sweet Georgian wine.

4 cups apple cider
1 (750-ml) bottle red wine
1/4 cup honey
2 cinnamon sticks
1 orange, zested and juiced
4 whole cloves
3 star anise
4 oranges, peeled, for garnish

Combine the cider, wine, honey, cinnamon sticks, zest, juice, cloves and star anise in a large saucepan, bring to a boil and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes. Pour into mugs, add an orange peel to each and serve.

2. Grog with honey

Invented by a British admiral for his sailors, grog now is a very popular hot alcoholic drink throughout many countries. Georgians also enjoy its spicy flavor and often serve it in various café-bars. Here we offer a distinguished version of grog with Georgian honey instead of brown sugar. You can prepare it in advance, pour in thermos and take with you when hiking or skiing in country’s winter resorts.

4 cups apple juice
1/4 cup honey
1 cinnamon stick
1 tsp grated orange peel
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 cup light rum, optional

Combine all ingredients except rum in medium saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Simmer 5 minutes. Stir in rum just before serving, if desired.

3. Cocktail Old Tom

For whiskey lovers there is such interesting and delightful British cocktail Old Tom. Yet if you were not able to find it in Georgia’s café-bars you can prepare it very easily together with your friends and have some fun. It consists of whiskey, hot water, honey and a little lemon juice. Two basic ingredients you need are Georgian honey and Georgian produced whiskey Jimsher. Place cinnamon stick and cloves in boiling water, then add whiskey, little bit of sugar, few drops of lemon juice and honey. Before serving, put a lemon slice in a glass.

4. Homemade raspberry tea with chacha

If you have already caught cold, Christmas is almost here and you want to recover before the celebration begins, raspberry tea with Georgian chacha and honey is what you need. Raspberries are rich in effective antioxidants as well phytonutrients. These elements proficiently reinforce your immune system and help your body to fight disease. Georgian chacha instantly warms up your entire body and kills bacteria and viruses. The drink is extremely easy to prepare: add two teaspoons of raspberry jam in hot cup of water, add one teaspoon of honey, two teaspoons of chacha and mix well. Consume the drink hot, but be careful and don’t burn your mouth.

5. Irish coffee

Irish coffee with whiskey flavor balanced by tender cream is women’s favorite drink, yet the one from a coffee vending machine at your office does not taste as fresh and good as it should. So follow this easy recipe and make some yummy coffee for yourself.

1 cup freshly brewed hot coffee
1 tablespoon brown sugar
3 tablespoons of Georgian whiskey
Heavy cream, slightly whipped

Pour coffee and brown sugar in hot water and mix well until completely dissolved. Blend in whiskey. Top with a collar of the whipped heavy cream, sprinkle with cinnamon powder to your taste and serve.
