Mourning fallen heroes of April 9 tragedy
09 April, 2016
After the April 9 tragedy that claimed lives of 21 people expressing their protest peacefully and demanding Georgia’s secession from Soviet Union, a  40-day mourning was declared  throughout  the country.  In total 17 females and 4 males were brutally killed by the Soviet Army on the night of April 9 in 1989. Unfortunately the stories of many heroes are not known to the public, especially to the new generation. Yet, it is the duty of every citizen to know to whom we owe our freedom today. Everyone should know that among the deceased heroes were under age students Eka Bezhanishvili, Tamar Chovelidze, Natia Bashaleishvili and even a pregnant girl Eliso Chipashvili who was poisoned by the unknown gas and found dead on the next day at the morgue. The photo presented here depicts the mourning march at Rustaveli Avenue, where the massacre took place. It shows people holding photos of 21 heroes who sacrificed themselves to the freedom and the well being of Georgian nation.
