Gelati Monastery in Georgia - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Gelati is a medieval monastic complex built by great King David IV Aghmashenebeli (David the Builder) near Kutaisi, city in Imereti region of western Georgia. The monastery is considered the masterpiece of the Georgian Golden Age, founded in 1106 Gelati is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Historically, Gelati was one of the main cultural and intellectual centers in Georgia. Many outstanding Georgian scientists, theologians and philosophers, many of whom had actively served at various orthodox monasteries abroad and translated many priceless manuscripts used to teach there.  The Gelati Monastery has preserved centuries-old murals and manuscripts dating back to the 12th to 17th centuries. In addition its founder and one of the greatest Georgian kings David IV is buried there that makes the site even more unique and sacred for Georgians.
