Rare Caucasus tur in Georgia - Happy World Animal Day

Today, October 4, marks the World Animal Day, an international day of action for animal rights and welfare.The mission of World Animal Day, according to the official World Animal Day website is "To raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe. It's celebrated in different ways in every country, irrespective of nationality, religion, faith or political ideology. The first World Animal Day was celebrated on 24 March 1925. In relation to this date, we present the photo of wild goats, also known as Caucasian tur, a mountain-dwelling caprine found only in the Caucasus, captured in Georgia’s Lagodekhi Protected Areas. There are two types of turs: East and West Caucasian. These wild goats usually live in rough mountainous terrain and feed on alpine grass. Hunting them is strongly banned, since they are included into Georgia’s Red List. Caucasian turs are found in the provinces of Lagodekhi, Kvareli, Telavi, Lentekhi, Mestia, Oni and in the mountains of Abkhazia.
