Pre-election address by Georgia's outstanding public figure in 1897
08 October, 2016
In relation to the parliamentary elections that took place Georgia on October 8, we want to present to you a fragment from what one of the most famous and reverend public figures and writers of Georgia Ilia Chavchavadze wrote in the 19th century. This address was in reference to the Tbilisi City Assembly’s elections that were held in 1897 and it was published in the newspaper Iveria.

“Tomorrow, May 18, is the judgment day. We will have to decide who will take care of Tiflis for the next three-four years, who will be responsible to work with diligence to make our lives better because the law has given us the right to decide the faith of our capital city ourselves.

A great responsibility is on your shoulders and before you cast your vote, you have to ask your conscience, your heart, your mind several times, to tell you who is worthy and who is not, regardless of whether that person is important or not so important. You need a person who would not deliberately free the rich men from paying taxes and make the poor pay instead. You need a person who would clean your remote districts from dirt and dust and not only take care of the streets where the rich live.

Anyone who is able to vote has to go to the polling stations and fulfill their duty to their city. You have to know that anyone who will be chosen by you to represent you at the assembly will be responsible for your wellbeing and the wellbeing of your family, for the next four years.

Many things can happen in four years – bad things as well as good things”, - The letter reads.
