“Prince Charming” of Georgian politics leaves the scene
10 October, 2016
The leader of Free Democrats party Irakli Alasania has left the politics. He made the statement at his party’s headquarters a few hours ago.

This decision means that Alasania will not take part in the second round of first-past-the-post elections in the town of Gori, where, according to the preliminary results, he accumulated 19.38% of the votes and came second in the first round. Since no candidate was able to receive more than half of all the votes, second round is necessary to decide the final winner among the individuals who took first and second places. But Alasania said he does not plan to run for parliament any more.

‘I want to say thank you very much to all the people who voted for me and particularly in the town of Gori, but I have made the decision to stop my campaign. The reason is that in order to fulfill all the promises given by our party, we needed to have bigger representation in the parliament. Unfortunately, we have not been able to do that. Because of the fact that I do not see the possibility how we can make strong impact on the processes that are underway in our country, I have made this decision to temporarily leave the politics’, - Alasania stated.

Irakli Alasania founded Our Georgia – Free Democrats party in 2009. In the beginning of 2012 they joined the Georgian Dream coalition and from October 25 of the same year until October 4, 2014 he was the Minister of Defense.

Earlier, from September 2004 to March 2006 Alasania was the Chariman of Abkhazian Autonomous Republic and President’s advisor in conflict resolution issues.

In 2006 Alasania was the permanent representative of Georgia in United Nations Organization. He resigned in December of 2008 and said the reason for it was the differences from Mikheil Saakashvili’s political views, including in the questions of conflicts resolution.

In this particular image Irakli Alasania is featured together with his wife, Natia Panjikidze. As later the politician’s wife explained, they were attending the inauguration of Georgia’s fourth president Giorgi Margvelashvili and she dropped her shoe two times, but his “Prince” as she called him, was always by her side and prevented her from falling down and hurting her feet.
