Why old courtyards in Tbilisi were called Italian
24 October, 2016
Tbilisi is notable for its narrow streets, old buildings and especially Italian style courtyards. The term Italian courtyard emerged during Soviet times. Tbilisi courtyards often resembled Italian courtyards, since the neighborhood consisted of people with different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds living side by side; subsequently the yard was always lively and noisy. Italian style courtyards were considered as one big family, since the tenants shared each other’s happiness as well as grief. Such type of houses and yards was quite popular in the 20th century, yet today’s Italian courtyards have changed significantly as they are not as lively and  populated. Unfortunately some of the houses have been destroyed and replaced by tall blocks of flats. Yet some unique Italian courtyards have been preserved up to now and one of them, located at Asatiani Street #38, serves as a perfect example.
