Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani - One of the first Georgian diplomats
04 November, 2016
On November 4, 1658 Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani, one of the first Georgian diplomats, known as the man who “paved the road to Europe” was born. As a respected member of King Vakhtang VI’s court, he was sent as an emissary to the royal courts of 17th-century European monarchs, seeking help against common enemies – the Persian and Ottoman empires. His journey to Europe carried immense significance for Georgia. Apart from being a diplomat, he also was a fable-writer and a lexicographer. His Sitkvis Kona (A Bundle of Words) remains relevant to this day, and his collection of fables Sibrdzne Sitsruisa (Wisdom of Fancy) has been translated into many languages. Firts photo in the  collage features a bust of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani made by Georgian sculptor Silovan Kakabadze in 1947.
