Cuba’s leader dies at 90 - Fidel Castro’s historic visit to Georgia
26 November, 2016
Cuba's former president Fidel Castro, one of the world's longest-serving and most iconic leaders, has died at the age of 90. His younger brother and successor as President Raul Castro announced the news on state television. He said Fidel would be cremated later on Saturday under his own will.

It is known that Castro had friendly relations with The First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Nikita Khrushchev and even visited Georgia back in the 1960s, when the country was part of the Soviet Union.

The leader of the Cuban revolution visited the small town of Duripshi in Abkhazia, together with the then General Secretary of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev. The First Secretary of the Abkhazian Government Mikheil Bgazhba hosted them. The guests were welcomed with a festive supra (feast) where they traditionally had to drink wine from the horn of a goat and give toasts. As some say, the Soviet leader emptied it with pleasure, while Castro only sipped a little bit and spilled the rest on the ground. Disappointed with this fact, Bgazhba allegedly whispered to Khrushchev that such behavior was an insult to the Abkhazians. So, Khrushchev ordered the horn to be filled and handed it to Castro. This time, the Cuban guest drank it to the end and even gave a toast. What he liked most about the Georgian feast was smoked Sulguni cheese, and afterwards the Soviet Government sent tons of this type of cheese to Cuba. From Abkhazia, Fidel Castro and Nikita Khrushchev headed to Tbilisi. In Georgia’s capital several cultural events were held in honor of the guests. Castro visited new districts of the city: Vake, Dighomi and Saburtalo.

At the time Fidel Castro was single and he allegedly liked Georgian journalist, Lia Mikadze so much that he even wanted to marry her and take her to Cuba, but she refused.
