David the Builder – Glorious king of Georgia
08 February, 2017
February 8 marks the Day of David IV, also known as David the Builder (Davit Aghmashenebeli in Georgian), largely considered as the greatest among Georgian kings.  King David from Bagrationi dynasty ascended the throne at the age of 16 and reigned in Georgia from 1089 until his death in 1125. David went into the history of Georgia as the most kind, powerful, intelligent and successful ruler who brought Golden Age to the country. He freed country from the Seljuk Turks, established peace in the country, cared for the well-being of his people, promoted the cultural life and education. David the Builder is also notable for constructing Gelati Monastery and Academy as a grand tribute to his victory over the Turks. The academy was one of the first institutions of higher education founded in the Middle Ages, and became a principal cultural center in Georgia. David is also famous for his progressive reforms of the army, church and administration that played significant role in reuniting the state and bringing most of the lands of the Caucasus under Georgia’s control. Among the powerful king’s most outstanding achievements is the incredible victory of the Battle of Didgori of August 12, 1121. This battle was chronicled in the history of Georgia as the ‘Miraculous Victory’ since, according to many sources the army of 55 600 Georgians defeated around 300 – 400 thousand Seljuks. David the Builder was canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church for his achievements and immense contribution to Georgian state and people.
