Chubchika – Ingenious simplicity of Georgian artist
10 February, 2017
Outstanding Georgian artist, theatrical and graphic painter, Tengiz Mirzashvili, widely known under his nickname – Chubchika, was born on February 10, 1934, in Mestia, regional center of Svaneti.Chubchika stood out for his unusual vision, plain but unique style and technique.

In 1952, Tengiz Mirzashvili entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Tbilisi. He worked at the Children’s Gallery and is considered one of its founders. In 1977, the famous Russian film director, Andrei Tarkovsky, invited him to work on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.  Mirzashvili was the student of a famous Georgian artist and illustrator Sergo Kobuladze. Chubchika illustrated up to 100 books, including those of famous Georgian writers such as Ilia Chavchavadze, Vazha-Pshavela, Giorgi Leonidze and many others.

As some of his friends and acquaintances recall, his house reminded of a museum that kept paintings by four generations of artists. Many Georgian films are hard to imagine without the works by his father, Revaz Mirzashvili. Great artist and an incredible person passed away on January 2, 2008. Tengiz Mirzashvili would turn 83 today.
