Historic day: Georgian cadets gathered to confront Russian occupation
25 February, 2017
February 25 is one of the most tragic and painful dates in the history of Georgia referred to as Soviet Occupation Day. Exactly 96 years ago, in 1921, Russian Red Army invaded Georgia and occupied the country. Georgia lost its newly-gained independence on this day and fell victim to the Soviet rule. The photo presented here depicts Georgian army of cadets gathered in the yard of Georgia’s former parliament. At that time a church used to stand on that place. The battle between Georgia and Russia claimed many lives of Georgian soldiers, who were ultimately recognized as heroes. Despite their commitment and bravery the country was occupied by Russian forces and only after 70 years of Soviet rule, Georgia seceded from the Soviet Union, adopting the Act of Reestablishment of Independence on 9 April 1991, in the aftermath of massive strike and protests against Soviet Russia in Georgia.
