Kutaisi – One of the oldest cities in the world

Kutaisi is an ancient city of western Georgia. It has changed its name several times over the course of history. In the old chronicles it is mentioned under the names of Aia and Kutaia. For centuries the city has been regarded as the capital of western Georgia, referred to as Kolkheti, Egrisi, Lazeti, Abkhazia. The city is home to many historical landmarks such as Bagrati Church dating back to 11th century, Gelati Monastery, built in the 12thcentury, Sataplia cave, etc. The city was built on the banks of Rioni River that flows through the city. Kutaisi is included in the list of the top ten oldest cities in Europe. The photo depicts the city and its famous river flowing through rocks, captured by Georgian photographer Giorgi Nikolava.
