Elene Akhvlediani – Georgian artist whose talent impressed Picasso

April 18, 1898 marks the birthday of an outstanding Georgian female artist Elene Akhvlediani. the artist was born in Georgia’s Kakheti region, that she frequently depicted on her canvas. A painter, graphic artist, and theater decorator Elene used to design plays at Marjanishvili Theater in Tbilisi. The artist earned recognition for her amazing and distinguished artworks of Georgia’s landscapes and old districts.  Elene was one of those Georgian artists, who managed to live and study abroad for a while that, as a result, affected her drawing style and taste.

During her life Elene traveled to Italy and France, where other prominent Georgian painters such as Lado Gudiashvili, Davit Kakabadze and  Shalva Kikodze used to stay for a while and exhibit their works at prestigious galleries.

It is a well known fact that during one of her exhibitions in France Pablo Picasso and Paul Signac were attracted by Elene’s paintings.  Pablo Picasso was amazed by her artwork named Winter in Kakheti  to such extent that even wanted to purchase it, yet he received refusal from Georgian female artist, who told the great painter that she liked her painting too and was not planning to sell it at all. As it is known, since then these two great artists became good friends.
