Statue of the Saint Andrew the Apostle in Adjara
12 May, 2017
Today, the Orthodox Church is celebrating the day of Georgia’s enlightener, Andrew the Apostle.

On the photo you can see the statue of the Saint, located by the Sarpi waterfall in Adjara region, close to the Turkish border.

Andrew was the brother of Peter the Apostle. According to the Gospel, Andrew was first called to become disciple of Jesus and that is why he was called Andrew the First Called. Before coming to Georgia, the Holy Godmother told Andrew that he was going to preach in her chosen land.

Andrew the Apostle first arrived in Didadjara, the region of Kartli and brought along the icon given to him by Saint Mary.

Saint Andrew the First Called was crucified in the town of Petra in Greece. His day is celebrated by Georgian Orthodox Church twice a year. May 12 is the day when Andrew the Apostle came to Georgia.
