Ascension of Jesus Christ from Pirosmani’s perspective
25 May, 2017
Today the Orthodox Christian world celebrates the Ascension of Jesus Christ, in other words, thedeparture of Christ from Earth into the presence of God. In relation to this day, festive liturgies are held at all the churches across Georgia. The celebration takes place on 40th day after Easter, in particular on Thursday, of the sixth week after the Resurrection of Jesus. According to the Gospel, Jesus Christ was still appearing before his disciples during 40 days after Resurrection. On the 40th day, his disciples gathered in a house in Jerusalem, where Christ appeared before them once again.  Jesus promised them that soon the Holy Spirit would come down on them and told them not to leave Jerusalem.  After that, Jesus took his disciples towards Bethany, blessed them and ascended on the Mount of Olives. When the disciples were looking to the sky, they saw two men dressed in white. The men clad in white told them that Jesus will return "in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."

The Ascension of Jesus is an important theme in Christian art, as a rule, the ascending Jesus is often depicted blessing an earthly group below him to signify his blessing the entire Church. This particular image is yet another interesting interpretation of Jesus ascending in the clouds. The painting was performed by famous Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani who lived between 19thto 20th centuries. The artist was self-thought and was distinguished for his minimalist and unusual painting style. Niko is also notable for his other paintings done in the Easter theme.
