Abandoned monument at the Georgian Military Road
04 October, 2017
Jvari (cross) pass is a high mountain pass, at an elevation of 2.379 meters above the sea level, located between Tbilisi,Georgia, and Vladikavkaz, Russia, on the Georgian Military Road. It is one of the most beautiful and mystical landscapes throughout the country.

The pass is located on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range in Georgia, situated in the Stepantsminda District. The area is characterized by subalpine and alpine zones.

The photo features a large concrete monument built in 1983 that once  commemorated ”friendly relations” between the two countries and the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk. The monument has lost its meaning for years due to events that happened over the course of history and now it only represents an abandoned statue. The landscape captured by Georgian photographer Giorgi Liparteliani depicts gloomy weather and the memorial surrounded by dark clouds that reflect the current strained situation between the two countries. When travelling to Kazbegi many locals and tourists stop at this site, since it offers stunning views of the great mountains.
