October 9 marks the birthday of Georgian innovator Niko Nikoladze

Niko Nikoladze, a prominent Georgian public figure, was born on October 9, 1843 in Kutaisi, the capital of the western region of Imereti.

Niko Nikoladze, was considered a progressive thinker and one of the leaders of so-called 60s(public-political movement) by Georgian society in his lifetime.

Niko was appreciated and beloved for his commitment to developing his homeland, for carring ourt various projects,  implementing technical innovations for the wellbeing of the people and countyry’s economic prosperity.

Everyone was surprised by Niko’s progressive plans and projects, that is why he is still regarded as the father of technical progress in Georgia.

His contribution in the search and processing of black stone and ores as well as in the construction of Poti Port was significant.

Niko Nikoladze, together with millionaire Engineer Palaşhkov, built the Tbilisi-Poti Railway in 1867-1874, which was the first railway in the Transcaucasia. For this great work Niko Nikoladze was awarded with a golden coin that allowed him to travel for free with any Russian railway.

In 1885-1893 Niko Nikoladze played a major role in Tbilisi municipal construction. By his initiative was constructed Avchala water pump, before this technology was implemented citizens of Tbilisi had to get water for drinking and other purposes directly from Mtkvari River. Besides, he promoted the arrangement of horsecar as well as the renovation of Tbilisi baths.

The great Georgian innovator and public figure passed away on April 1, 1928, at the age of 85. On April 5 he was buried on Mtatsminda Cemetery , Georgias “Holly Mounatain”
