19 January, 2018
On January 19 Orthodox Georgians celebrate Epiphany feast. Epiphany is one of the 12 main Christian feasts that celebrate the revelation of the Son of God as human-Jesus Christ. The occasion commemorated the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River by John the Baptist.

The majority of Georgia’s population are Orthodox Christian so the day is a public holiday in the country.

In relation to the holiday the Georgian Orthodox Church holds a mass baptism and water blessing rituals. Catholicos Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II delivers solemn liturgy with the priesthood at Sameba,St. Trinity Cathedral. After the service, water is sanctified and distributed among the believers.

It is believed that on this day, the sanctified water acquires benevolence of the River Jordan and is kept throughout the year, and is not spoiled unlike ordinary water.

The Orthodox Church recommends drinking the sanctified water during ordeals and to help with ailments.
