Luxurious suits, watches, massage, traveling – new charges against Saakashvili
Today, the Chief Prosecutor’s Office gave Georgia’s former President Mikheil Saakashvili and head of Special State Protection Service Teimuraz Janashia over to the court’s responsibility as offenders , as the Prosecutor’s office informs. The case concerns embezzlement of 8.837,461 GEL from the government’s budget.

191,643 GEL was spent on Mikheil Saakashvili’s hired Spanish cook Sergio Calderon Latasa; namely, on his salary, rent of his living quarters, salary for his interpreter and his travel expenses to Spain.
75,181 GEL was spent on hotel costs and travel tickets for Mikheil Saakashvili’s stylist, Ali Kamal.
26,388 GEL went to former Tbilisi Mayor Giorgi Ugulava’s hotel services and weight loss procedures in the Austrian city of Inssbruck; also, 88,919 GEL was spent on hotel services abroad for Koba Nakopia, MPs - Goga Khachidze, Nugzar Tsiklauri, Giorgi Gabashvili, Sergo Ratiani, Petre Tsiskarishvili, Levan Varshalomidze and Giorgi Arveladze.

6,342 GEL was spent on Mariam Sajaia’s hotel cost in United Arab Emirates as well as the city of Batumi; 6,401 GEL were spent on Alana Gagloeva’s stay in United Arab Emirates as well; travel tickets and hotel service for Kristina and Natalia Usova cost 15,873 GEL; 38,247 GEL went to obtaining tickets for Vera Kobalia’s parents as well as her sister Nina Kobalia; renting a personal jet for Mikheil Saakashvili cost 503,383 GEL; renting a“Porsche”, “Mercedes” and “Audi” for Mikheil Saakashvili and Giorgi Ugulava in Austria cost 58,876 GEL; 45,214 GEL was paid for renting a limousine and a minivan for Mikheil Saakashvili’s visit to the city of Verona, Italy; renting a helicopter in Peru cost 33,204 GEL; hiring bicycles for Mikheil Saakashvili in various countries cost 35,350 GEL; hiring a yacht in the city of Pisa, Italy cost 25,237 GEL.

Mikheil Saakashvili purchased seven jackets and a cashmere sports coat in Great Britain, with a total cost of 49,499 GEL, as well as two hand-stitched suits that cost 7.994, 84 GEL; he also obtained ten wristwatches in USA, Britain and Georgia, which cost 53,283 GEL in total; acquisition of a painting by a body painter Meredith Ostrom cost 15,989 GEL; a 2-day vacation in a Thai resort of Phuket, complete with plane tickets, hotel service, food and car hiring for Mikheil Saakashvili, Davit Bakradze and Levan Varshalomidze cost 127,858 GEL.

It is also noteworthy that in parallel with these secret expenditures, both the Presidential Administration
and Special State Protection Service saw the following sums of money taken from their budgets to be spent by the President: 6.213.015 GEL in 2009, 3. 340,728 GEL in 2010, 4.654,100 GEL in 2011 and 5.809,808 GEL in 2012, which comes to a total of 20.007,651 GEL, and legality of these expenditures is being additionally investigated.

Currently, Mikheil Saakashvili is charged with using a position of authority to embezzle 8.837,461 GEL from the state budget. Charges against him and Teimuraz Janashia are filed according to part 3 of clause 182 of Georgian Criminal Code, which carries from 7 to 11 years of imprisonment.
