Levan Gvazava's case – armed attack or attempted suicide?
Last week, a tragedy occurred at the territory of Okrokana, not far from Tbilisi – former Deputy Interior Minister Levan Gvazava was found grievously wounded next to the body of his cousin, former policeman Rezo Kalomletsavi. The moment the incident
became public, two contradictory versions of what happened were voiced. First one attributed Kalomletsavi’s death to an accidental shot by Gvazava, after which, overcome by grief, he attempted to commit suicide. The second one – unconfirmed by the investigation so far – implies an armed attack on the pair, with Kalomletsavi dying and Gvazava surviving, albeit barely.

“Former deputy interior minister was found in the vicinity of Tbilisi with grievous wounds”

At the moment, the wounded former deputy of ex-Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili is in care at Tbilisi’s Republican Hospital, with his condition described as critical but stable. However, the investigation of the case currently pertains to article 108 of Georgian Criminal Code, which is premeditatedgeotv.ge murder.

This incident has quickly become a reason for a split among the governmental representatives. Gvazava was a member of the previous government, and him getting described positively and as having an immaculate record by acting Deputy Interior Minister Zurab Gamezardashvili and Sports Minister Tariel Khechikashvili has almost immediately caused strife in the ruling group.

“Naturally, what happened in Okrokana is unfortunate from a humane point of view, especially for the victims’ families. However, I simply do not understand some of the ministers and their opinions, which they made known publicly, to boot! Gvazava was a respectable person with an immaculate past? He, Merabishvili’s deputy?! Are they going to declare next that Merabishvili also has an immaculate past and sits in prison for nothing?! No one should be surprised at the people getting angry after statements such as these. We are going to sort all this out internally, don’t you worry!” came the angry response of parliamentary majority member Luka Kurtanidze. His pathos was shared by Giorgi Volski, chairman of the Georgian Dream parliamentary faction:

“One cannot speak of a man’s immaculate past when he is in an opposing political camp,” he said.
We remind our readers that Levan Gvazava is one of the founders of Law Enforcer’s Defense League, which unites many former high-ranking officials of the Interior Ministry.
