Lazika Successfully Initiated into Battlefield
First large-scale military drills attended by New Government

On April 30, on the Vaziani Training Range, Georgian Administration marked the 22nd anniversary of Georgian Armed Forces by staging demonstrative tactical field drills, code named Isari-013 (“Arrow-013”). The honorary audience was made up of the new Government led by PM Bidzina Ivanishvili.
The key role in these demonstrative drills was assigned to the Special Forces. No wonder, because earlier the Defence Minister Irakli Alasania had been repeatedly emphasizing the need to
train fast response units and enhance military readiness.
Before the eyes of the guests, foreign military attaches and journalists the Georgian Special Forces demonstrated sophisticated physical readiness under the guidance of a disabled but extremely high spirited senior officer.
The troops played out a scenario of freeing a hostage held inside a building. For the optimal visibility, one of the building walls had been preliminarily removed. In this way, the viewers were able to observe every move of the Special Forces during the ambush, forcible entry through the building door by setting off plastic explosive, “elimination” of terrorists, who were holding the line on the second floor, and saving the hostage. In addition, masked Special Forces stopped an enemy pick-up with an explosion, captured the people inside and hijacked the vehicle.
In the next phase, two military helicopters joined the battle with a salvo of unguided reactive missiles that annihilated “the enemy” positions and excited and galvanized the members of the Government.
After the performing specific maneuvers, “flying crocodiles”, two helicopters landed in the vicinity of observers’ podium (one of them belonged to the squadron of the border police in the past). The landed troops received fire support from four armored vehicles of Cobra type, which represented the Special Forces. Arrayed in a line formation, the troops unleashed an overwhelming fire on the targets symbolized by heaps of tires, one T-55 Tank and one casual military vehicle.
Something unimaginable was unfolding on the military training range, at least for the PM and those members of the Government, who witnessed the reality of armed operations first time in their lives. Colossal explosions of anti-tank reactive missiles hitting the targets, were flinging up the tires in the air by some 50 meters. Fire engulfed the infantry military vehicle as well as the tank.
Actually, the drill organizers resorted to a little military trick to maximize the effects. In order to create a source of large and long-lasting fire, they seemed to have filled the targets – i.e. the tank and the vehicle – with wood chips.
Shortly after, three Didgori armored vehicles raved in to the training range and unloaded the landing squads who wasted no time to engage the enemy while the crews of Didgori vehicles opened fire from remotely controlled heavy machine guns.
While the Didgori combat vehicles maintained the onslaught on the left flank, the right flank witnessed sudden appearance of three-tracked Lazikas roaring their ways into the battlefield. It was the first battle for Lazika infantry vehicles. They literally drowned the enemy in the inferno from the remotely controlled 23mm automatic cannons and machine guns.
Subsequently, heavy artillery too joined the battle. Reactive systems of volley fire conducted by the first artillery brigade out of covered-up positions, made several missile salvos while mortar guns put up an artificial curtain of zero visibility with special smoke generating mortars.
As with any other demonstrative drills (both in and beyond Georgia), “we won the battle and the enemy went bust”. The PM and the members of the Government thanked the militaries and wished them further success. Hopefully, the politicians appreciated both complexity and nobility of the military profession.
It would be great if the United HQ of the Armed Forces stages another large-scale military drills where (as in Isari-013) different military branches will master synergy of tactical operations.
