“A clever enemy is more dangerous” – Georgian soldiers in Central Africa
Georgian armed forces are involved in a peacekeeping mission operated under the EU aegis. Soldiers of one of the infantry battalions of Georgia have already departed for the Central African Republic.

We contacted one of the mission’s participating soldiers via social media and asked him for a description of the situation there:
“We complete the peacekeeping mission in the capital city Bangi. I could not imagine being surprised by heat after Afghanistan but I should say it is terribly hot
here. The temperature is more than 50 degrees and it is hot even at night in contrast with Afghanistan. Still, I believe we will get accustomed to it day by day.
As we know, the reason for conflict is religious in nature – there is a sharp conflict between Christians and Muslims. But Christians here are different from our Christians and these Muslims also differ from the rest of Muslims. They are quite fanatical and many of them incorporate traditional indigenous elements into their faith practices, following their ancestors’ traditions, though both sides consider themselves to be religious.

[Author’s note: Faith wars in Central Africa have turned into a problem for the whole world. Large-scale massacres often take place between Christians and Muslims and they justify it by the precedence of their own religions. Their religious leaders often encourage this kind of approach. On the grounds of the conflict, ritual cannibalism also takes place]

– I hope you have passed the corresponding training course.

– Yes, we have. The French and German militaries are here. We are with the French, under their supervision. The French side takes the main responsibility for the peacekeeping operation named “Sangaris”. I have been in ISAF mission too, but threats are completely different here. The group of Muslims named “Seleka” hunts the local Christian population. They burn and destroy villages of Christians, often slaughtering innocents.

– What are the functions of the Georgian battalion?

– We are committed to ensure security and stability. There is an international airport here and we patrol around it. We also set up roadblocks and control them.

– You said there are different difficulties than in Afghanistan. What did you mean?

– Like Afghan children, even the smallest ones here know how to use a gun. In contrast with the “wrapped up” people in Afghanistan, the Africans are nude above the waist and wear many adornments. People here are very smart and flexible, courageous and careful. And a clever enemy is more dangerous.

– As far as it is known, local insects are very dangerous especially for people with poor immunity…

– Yes, a small mosquito may cause a serious, dangerous disease. But our leadership has already applied measures. Insects are not dangerous for the local people; they even eat them. They seem to be very joyous people. They do not worry much about their life. I know they worry about long-term rainy periods, lasting from May to October sometimes. That’s why they love the sun so much…

– Is the remuneration the same that was in Afghanistan? And how long does the mission last?

– Yes, it is. And the mission will last 6 months.

– We wish you a safe return to Georgia.

– Thank you.
