‘OUR LIST IS BETTER THAN ‘GEORGIAN DREAM’S
06 September, 2012

Interview with Mikheil Machavariani, First Deputy Speaker

Last week Bidzina Ivanishvili, leader of ‘Georgian Dream’ addressed International organizations and authorities. With this issue we began our interview with Mikheil Machavariani.

M.M. – For more than one year the authorities have been doing their best to hold fair and democratic elections. We’ve created a group that is working with the election commission, wrote a new election code, elaborated a new legislation that made media space more democratic. After introducing Must-carry the access of

our citizens to TV channels has increased. They can watch TV debates. We recognize surveys by IRI, NDI and other organizations that correspond to international standards.

Q. – Bidzina Ivanishvili noted in his address that in case his requirements aren’t met he won’t recognize election results.

M.M. – If this is preliminary preparation for losing of elections, it’s their problem. The main thing is to take our desire to voters. We aim at more employment, more health insurance for everybody, development of agriculture. Elections are competition and they will reveal who copes better with the task.

Q. – What would you say about the ‘Georgian Dream’ list?

M.M. – For sure our list is better than ‘Georgian Dream’s. We want our country to go forward, not backward.

Q. – According to spread information, during the counter-terrorist operation in Lopota gorge the killed were local Qists, not militants…

M.M. – There are issues in which even the opponents should be united. Our opponents’ position that ‘middle rows should be picked’ is not serious or solid. We realize that we’ll have to work in Parliament together with ‘Georgian Dream’ and there are issues in which we must have united position.

You are aware of the processes undergoing in North Caucasus, particularly in Dagestan and Ingushetia. For this reason a part of militants found themselves in Georgia. In order not to let it turn into a further provocation a special operation was planned. They must know that they can’t come to Georgia armed with automatic weapon and set their rules in the forest. In case Russian citizens want to come to Georgia they can come as tourists, not armed with automatic guns. These people violated Georgian legislation and Georgian State was obliged to react. Some people called the events in Lopota gorge a show. I’d like to ask such a person – do you love your motherland? Is this the love of the motherland? Is it an adventure when Interior Ministry liberates a kidnapped person?!

Q. – They couldn’t capture 6 militants; if they cross to Russian territory, then again there will be basis for provocation.

M.M. – I’m sure they will be taken.
