Experts Assess the Lapankuri Special Operation Divergently
17 September, 2012
The special operation carried out in the Lapankuri village by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia is being assessed by various analysts. Some of the experts believe that the events, which unfolded near the Georgian border with Russia, were planned by the Georgian government, while others believe that the pursuit operation of the intruding armed group was a lawful and necessary action.
Member of the “Georgian Dream” coalition and Expert in Caucasian Matters, Mamuka Areshidze, believes the special operation
carried out in the Lopota George was the Georgian government’s bid to achieve an undisclosed aim. Areshidze thinks that the statement by the law enforcement forces about the penetration of the Georgian border by an armed group from Dagestan is untrue and that Kists from Pankisi were the ones eliminated by the Georgian special forces. Areshidze also stated that there were seven casualties, while eleven people—a Chechen among them—have been taken to one of the departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
David Smith, a political expert working in Georgia, considers any blame, attributed to the Georgian government for allegedly hiding the truth, to be without foundation. The expert says that the political opposition in Georgia is biased and inclined to criticize the steps taken by the government on every occasion, including the issue of Lapankuri special operation. Expert Nika Chitadze believes that the public should trust the official information and wait for the investigation on the matter to conclude.
According to official information, the investigation on the special operation carried out in the Lopota Gorge continues.
