VICE PM – CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENCY?
‘Ivanishvili’s decision to appoint me to the post of the Minister of Education and Science deprived me of ability to enjoy this country’, - said First vice Premier Giorgi Margvelashvili; we started our conversation with the issue of publishers’ and book-stores’ protest:
G.M. – This decision made the publishers suffer financially; they annually put GEL 50 million into their pockets. This money was expropriated from the people. It was morally incorrect. We want to alleviate
their everyday life and save the families from breaking their back.
Q. – Part of our society shows discontent with regard to authorities, saying that they didn’t vote for co-habitation with culprits.
A. – From October 1, new Georgia began. As by the Premier said, truth is the main watershed. We display our respect to those who admit their crime and go on serving the country.
Q. – Confession of the crime would have been uncharacteristic of ‘National Movement’s’ April 19 rally.
A. – It will take ‘National Movement’ much time to come to correspondence with reality. Since it took 9 years to turn ‘National’ into Georgian, presumably more time will be needed until they become really national. We’ll wait until they come to their mind and start serving the nation.
Q. – How did your arguing with Kakha Bendukidze end?
A. – (Is laughing) Have you seen, after mutual relations with me how many refined forms he acquired and how law-abiding he became? Bendukidze, who during Saakashvili’s times and afterwards tried to slander legislation, aligned regulations of his Institute with the law and became law-abiding.
Q. – “National Movement” severely criticized the Premier’s speech in EU.
A. – The Premier’s speech was the one of a man who respects his own self and the country. During 9 years we lost the perception that we are a nation that made considerable contribution to the history of mankind. Nations are not measured by 5 or 9-year-long history or 15-minute speech. When a Georgian takes floor in Europe he must make a speech as a representative of a significant nation having 3000-year-long history. Premier’s speech was imbued with this feeling. He spoke as a representative of a nation that today faces economic and political problems but has a great history and dignity. Those who don’t have that feeling they are surprised - how a representative of Georgia dares to appear with such dignity at such a forum. For those who criticize the Premier, it’s strange to appear before such audience with dignity. They can only be in the posture of someone pending, a suppliant. We, the Georgians have exclusiveness with which we can enter European Union but we’ll look like yokels if we don’t respect our history.
Q. – As far as I know, 26th of May, one of the stately days for our country, will be celebrated differently.
A. – May 26 is a day of our pride, a special festive occasion. The only May 26 that is tragic for us, is May 26, 2011. It was a shameful day but all other May-26-days will be lucky. New authorities decided this day not to be a festival only for the capital.
This day should be celebrated by every citizen, regardless the place where he/she is. This day everybody – the military, government, clergymen and citizens will be in identical situation, not divided by tribunes.
There will be no other tribunes, passes, sectors, etc. We’ll celebrate it together. A military element will also be included.
Q. – Will there be no parade that was usually taken by Saakashvili?
A. – The parade will be taken by people, citizens of Georgia.
Q. – How do you fancy the President in the scenario of this holiday?
A. – Thanks to God, I have no responsibility for the President. President is free!
Q. – As they say, you are considered by Ivanishvili to be one of the nominees for presidency.
A. – I too heard about it and was very amazed, how do they know it?
Q. – When in NDI survey you took tenth position the Premier couldn’t hide his indignation; he assessed your work as the most successful.
A. – If I’m at tenth position, I’ll have to improve myself and take 9th position.
Q. – How would you assess 5-point drop of the Premier’s rating?
A. – I.e. I’m not working well and managed to lower his rating by 5 points. I’m a member of his Cabinet, am not I? I’ll get improved. When I take 9th position the Premier’s rating will improve as well.
Q. – I remember that you didn’t want to become a minister either but Ivanishvili persuaded you to take this post. In case he says that you’ll have to run for the presidency?
A. – I’m 43 years old, Bidzina is older than me but I consider him to be my friend. It’s difficult to foresee what can happen when two men discuss what is to be done. In Georgia big attention is paid when a friend is telling you something and when you are planning something together. What will happen, what kind of discussion shall we have is difficult to say but Bidzina’s word is of great significance for me.
