Five years passed since the Russia-Georgia war in 2008. 228 citizens, 170 military officers and 14 policemen died in August war. 8 soldiers are considered missing. Almost 150 thousand people fled their homes, 30 000 out of which are considered IDPs.
Intensive bombing of Georgian villages of Tskhinvali region began in the end of July 2008. The most serious clash between Ossetian armed formation and Georgians took place on August 1, resulting in 6 armed Ossetians’ death and 7 injured.
On August 8, Georgian armed forces were involved in conflict with separatists’ formation and Russian army. 15 thousand of Russian military officers came from Roki tunnel and border of Psou.
Russian military aviation made an air attack on military units and aerodromes in Georgian cities. Gori was bombed twice, including military base. Russian aviation bombed Vaziani base in Tbilisi, airplane factory, port of Poti, military bases in Senaki and Marneuli.
Russias 58th army occupied Kodori Gorge on August 12 and Akhalgori region on August 16. Russian military officers occupied territory of village Igoeti and locked the road linking West and East parts of country with armour technique.
Operations stopped after the interference of president of France Nicolas Sarkozy, who brought 6-point ceasefire agreement signed on September 8 by him and Russian President Medvedev. According to the agreement all Russian forces had to withdraw from areas adjoining South Ossetia and Abkhazia by October 10. Besides Sarkozy and other leaders - president of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, president of Poland Lech Kaczynski and president of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko visited Tbilisi. On 15 August US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited Georgia.
On 26 August Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, with only Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru following the step of recognition of Georgian territories.
According to 8 September agreement, Russia had to withdraw military forces to the places of their permanent deployment
EU monitors started patrolling in Georgia from October 1.
Gori was visited by Minister of Foreign Affairs of France Bernard Kouchner on 10 October to check process of withdrawing Russian troops. He visited several villages. He assessed that Moscow only partially followed the agreement. Russian occupants stayed in village Perevi that was left by them on 18 October 2010...
