‘SAAKASHVILI WAS IN BUILDING WHERE PREMIER WAS KILLED!’
Interview with expert Mamuka Areshidze

We began our conversation with Mamuka Areshidze about the conflict in Syria. But he also touched upon the political situation in Georgia and made scandalous declarations regarding more than one divulged cases.
M.A. – The sides participating in Syria conflict don’t care at all as to who used the chemical weapon. It’s named as a pretext for intervention but actually the reason is something else. The point is that Europe depends on Russian natural gas.
The United Arab Emirates energy companies drew up route and technology to take cheap Qatar natural gas to Europe. According to this plan, the gas pipeline must cross Syrian territory. Thus Bashar al-Assad’s pro-Russian government throws this project out of gear because while he wields the power, he will never go against Russia’s interests. The West desires to have the rulers in Syria, who will let natural gas pass through its territory without any problem. That’s why they are assisting the rebels to overthrow Assad’s rule.
Q. – What is the guarantee that the conflict will end soon and generally, how real is the threat of the third world war?
A. – I think the West will end the operation soon. If it doesn’t end it soon, then Iran will inevitably get involved in the conflict to protect Bashar al-Assad’s rule and accordingly, it will also be attacked. In this case Russia will attempt to protect Iran by all means and then there will be a threat of the third world war. The only way out is a quick power-change in Syria.
Q. – Let’s talk about Georgia’s domestic political situation. You declared that an FBI representative confessed to forging the conclusions on Ex-Premier Zurab Zhvania’s case. Would you specify when or under what circumstances you got his ‘confession’?
A. – I met him in Odessa, at an International Conference; I can give his name but it must by no means be published. We touched upon Zhvania’s case; one of FBI employees entered information in the conclusions, one part of which was inaccurately translated here. In short, in the conclusion it’s written that asphyxiation by natural gas was followed by death, as well as that it couldn’t be the reason of the death. If an ordinary literate person reads it, he will momentarily guess that it’s very inaccurate and full of mutually exclusive nuances.
The man who talked with me doesn’t work for FBI anymore; he used to supervise one of the departments there. He told me that he knew Saakashvili was a participant of the Zhvania’s assassination. To hide it, they exerted huge pressure on one of FBI employees; it was he who said in a private talk that the President too was in the building where Zhvania was killed.
I suppose that the kind of ‘confession’ that I got from the former FBI employee will certainly be kept at the Prosecutor’s Office. I know that the Archil Kbilashvili’s visit to America would include this issue as well. He presented the facts…
The Prosecutor’s Office can put an end to this case even today but they aren’t in a hurry because, actually, today there is dual power and it hampers solving the case. I’m sure Saakashvili was indeed at the place where Zhvania was killed and it didn’t happen without his sanction. Everything will become known after October 27 elections.
Q. – Public Defender put forward an initiative to set up a commission to investigate Lapankuri incident and you too will be a member of the group. Are there any new details in this case?
A. – Up till today it was known that two members of special mission unit - Archil Chokheli and Solomon Tsiklauri, as well as military physician Vladimer Khvedelidze died during Lapankuri operation. Nobody knew that one more unit-member, Rusunashvili too, lost his life. He was from Lapankuri, participated in the operation and on the day when he returned home, he committed suicide. August 29 was the anniversary of his death. It should be investigated whether he actually committed suicide or was killed. The family is frightened and they keep mum. As far as I know, he was a sniper.
