DIRTY BUSINESS
“They offered me to buy scenes showing personal life”

“Much is known about the underhanded methods and eavesdropping used by the previous government. Thousands of video and audio files of people’s private lives have been destroyed, but there is still fear that copies remain available, and some people may try to make them public. Lawyer Shalva Khachapuridze asserts that former high-ranking members of the Department of Constitutional Security (DCS) are attempting to sell these videos from abroad. According to him,
somebody called him from Holland and offered clips.
Shalva Khachapuridze: During those nine years they watched and eavesdropped on everybody. Overhearing of political figures, opposition members, businessmen, experts, journalists, doctors, representatives of criminal world was intensified… Members of the National Movement eavesdropped on one another and collected compromising evidence. Almost each power structure had a corresponding apparatus. There are lots of shots showing the private life of people. Today several judges want to get rid of Kublashvili and the people who rule the court, but they are blackmailed, with the help of those videos, by the head of district court Valeri Tsertsvadze.
A man contacted me from Holland and offered to buy a part of the huge archive…
Q. – Who offered it?
A. – Once I defended him. He was a businessman serving his term in Gldani prison on fabricated charges. Then he was made to pay through the nose and was set free. He had Georgian as well as European citizenship. Soon after the release from prison he went to Holland. There he met former employees of power structures who travel in different countries. As he said, these shots include National Movement members, journalists, opposition members, judges, prosecutors…They would sell any videos of those people, I could choose. He even named several MPs.
Q. – What is the price and who is the seller?
A. – I didn’t even try to find out about the price. I told him straight that whoever made those videos, they themselves could watch the dirty shots showing other people’s private life. DCS former employees who left the country and took those videos with them are trying to sell them, and make it a source of profit. I can figure out who my acquaintance came across - they are DCS employees who used to put their signature on any paper. He even told me who they were, but I’ll refrain from giving their names.
Q. – Maybe you could name at least one of them, it’s very important information.
A. – It’s Mastera. He is looking for a client. The man who offered me to buy this stuff even told me that he could arrange the deal without charge. I said I didn’t want anything and he could show it on any channel.
Q. – Aren’t the prisoners eavesdropped on now?
A. – Maybe some group is overheard but on the judge’s order. This equipment was brought after 7 November. The truck was also brought at that time – it looked like a garbage truck but it could accommodate 6 or 7 people. It was an armored truck; Saakashvili liked and ordered it. In case of need, it could be used as an imitation of a garbage truck, but actually the President and his family could be evacuated. At that time the situation was very tense and the truck was urgently purchased. I don’t know where it is now. Together with the truck’s ultra-modern equipment, it was brought from Israel. It needed no installation; you just had to aim it at the target.
When installing cable TV and Internet, eavesdropping equipment was also mounted in the flats… They videoed weddings; when the bridegroom and bride went to the hotel their relations were also shot. Their principle was – who knows, it can turn out to be useful. They arrested a man who committed no offence and told him that he committed a certain crime. He of course flatly denied it, but they told him that they knew everything about him – when he got married, what happened at the wedding party, where he went together with his wife and what they were doing and they demonstrated the tapes. The man would get frightened and sign any paper. Saakashvili was an immoral person and all these horrible things were happening due to this. He pardoned Bacho Akhalaia, trying to rehabilitate him because he is afraid that he may start talking. According to my information, former Minister Kezerashvili already began giving evidence against old functionaries.
