CLOCK THAT COST GEL 2 MILLION

‘The authorities paid no attention to the event until the US Ambassador assessed it’. After dispersing the veterans’ protest rally on Heroes’ Square in Tbilisi, we asked Giorgi Targamadze, leader of Christian-Democrats for an interview. He accused the authorities of being inadequate.
G.T. – No normal person could calmly observe whatever was going on at Heroes’ Memorial in the Capital of Georgia. The veterans expressed their protest in extremely peaceful manner and were going to break up. Nothing was happening

that could be followed by rash, hasty action on part of the authorities. But their political nature revealed itself there. I couldn’t understand or explain why they treated the veterans in such a way. What’s more, due to the New Year days even the society didn’t display much attention to this action. Besides moral and ethical side, the authorities’ attitude to the veterans was unjustified from the legal point of view as well.
Q. – It’s noteworthy that the authorities mentioned nothing about it until John Bass, the US Ambassador, assessed the dispersion of the veterans’ action.
G.T. – This is also a sign of sickness of our authorities. They paid no   attention to it until the US Ambassador made strict and direct assessment. I think it’s not enough to sack the person who slapped the lady in the face. His action should be given adequate assessment on part of the Georgian people and first of all   his family must express due moral estimation.
Q. – Instead of the veterans’ arrest Georgian National channels diligently covered Boris Nemtsov’s detainment in Moscow.
G.T. – This is not journalism any more. In this case the main function of television as the source of mass information – to review and be unbiased – was violated. Even if the fact was not assessed, it had to be covered. Today we have    radio, internet, mobile phone through which information is spread within seconds and when you hide it, you yourself, peace and democracy suffer. When a fact is not covered artificial involvement is obvious. My explanations as to who possesses corresponding levers for this in Georgia are unnecessary.
One sentence from the announcement of a famous Georgian military figure Gia Karkarashvili is still fresh in my memory: ‘You have defeated the veterans on the Heroes’ Square but the problem itself is not buried, it hasn’t vanished.’
Most painful for them isn’t inability of the State to give them free-of-charge insurance policy but the inflicted insult. By abolishing the servicemen’s hospital the authorities made a felonious decision.
When broadcasting New Year events from Batumi one could observe a tower that was erected on top of a branch of Batumi Central Bank. The clock installed on it cost GEL 2 million. Our faction submitted a proposal to Batumi City Hall on municipal financing of regular home visits of the pregnant and childbirth. This would solve the problem for Batumi and its surroundings and it’d cost GEL 1.7 million. Our proposal didn’t pass but instead they paid 2 million for the clock.
