The US Ambassador to Georgia Ian Kelly congratulates Georgia on Independence Day.
“I wish Georgia success, peace and prosperity for all its people”, he says and concludes his message with Georgian words of congratulation.

On April 9 of 1991, after the referendum held several days earlier, the Supreme Council of Georgia implemented what was the will of Georgian people and declared the country’s independence from the Soviet Union. Before that, 73 years earlier, on May 26, 1918, Georgia had declared
independence from Russian Empire only to be invaded by the Soviet Russia less than 3 years later. The act of independence signed in 1991 was based on the act signed in 1918. That is why the independence of Georgia is celebrated on May 26.
