Russia's illegal borderization on Georgian territory continues! - What EUMM says
A border sign across the occupation line in the Tskhinvali region of Georgia has been installed recently, as a result of which several local farmers’ agricultural lands have now partially fallen beyond the occupation line. As reported, the banner was installed 700 meters further into the Georgian-controlled territory. In relation to this case ,the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia expressed its deep concern and released a special statement on the issue.

“This is a continuation

of the illegal process of the so-called borderization, which not only restricts the fundamental rights of local residents but considerably damages the security situation on the ground and obstructs Georgia’s efforts to achieve peaceful resolution of the conflict. Despite the international community’s repeated calls, the Russian Federation continues to grossly violate the principles of international law and its commitments undertaken under the Ceasefire Agreement of 12 August 2008”, - The statement reads.

The borderization activities that took place in the Bershueti (Gduleti) area in June attracted the attention of EU Monitoring Mission as well. Concerning this issue, the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia released a statement. Here is what the statement says:

“Following media reports earlier today stating that a new ‘Green Sign’ has been installed in the vicinity of Bershueti (Gduleti), the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) immediately dispatched a patrol to the area to establish a real time picture of the situation on the ground.

The EUMM can confirm that borderisation activities took place in the Gduleti area in June, but is not able to confirm the installation of new ‘Green Signs’ during the past week.

According to EUMM’s own observations in the area, several ‘Green Signs’ were installed in the vicinity of Bershueti (Gduleti) on 19 June 2017 very close to the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) on a position which is not under control of the Georgian government (Tbiilisi Administred Territory).

Nonetheless, the EUMM considers the placement of ‘Green Signs’ unwarranted. Borderisation activities in any form, including placing of such signs, create obstacles to the freedom of movement and deprive farmers, who have been farming there for years, from cultivating their land.

This issue may be discussed at the next IPRM Meeting in Ergneti on 11 July 2017.

The EUMM will continue to monitor borderisation activities closely”, - EUMM statement reads.
