Vladimir Putin pays a visit to Abkhazia
08 August, 2017
Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in occupied Abkhazia, Georgia's breakaway region.

According to the Sputnik agency, a working meeting between de-facto President Raul Khajimba and Vladimir Putin began in Bichvinta a few minutes ago.

The meeting is underway behind the closed doors. The parties will make joint statements after the meeting.

The Russian President’s administration had not been confirming the President’s visit to Abkhazia till the last moment.

The conflict between Russian-backed Abkhazian separatists and Georgians broke out in
1992 and lasted for 13 months. Russia has recognized the independence of both Abkhazia and South Ossetia (Georgia’s yet another breakaway region) . Russia openly supports both regions of Georgia and the territories remain country’s breakaway regions up to now
